Common Fiat Panda problems, and how to check them

Problem 1
Fiat Panda: Dualogic gearbox judders, drops into neutral, or won’t select gears
What goes wrong
The hydraulic actuator (and its pump and accumulator) fails or loses pressure, and the single clutch wears; low hydraulic fluid and outdated clutch adaptation make it worse.
How to check it yourself
Read the gearbox module codes, check the Dualogic hydraulic fluid level, and listen for the actuator pump running too often or too long.
The usual fix
Top up or replace the hydraulic fluid and run a clutch self-learn; repair or replace the actuator or pump if it can’t hold pressure; replace a worn clutch.
Signs: Harsh shifting, Transmission slipping, Clutch slipping
Problem 2
Fiat Panda: Power steering cuts out: faulty torque sensor in the steering column
What goes wrong
The torque sensor in the electric power steering column fails, first intermittently (a brief warning light and heavy steering) and then permanently.
How to check it yourself
Read the power steering module codes (C1002 points to the column torque sensor) and check battery and charging voltage first, as low voltage can also switch the assistance off.
The usual fix
Repair or replace the steering column motor or torque sensor, then calibrate the steering angle. Heavy steering is a safety issue: drive carefully until fixed.

Problem 3
Fiat Panda: TwinAir rough running or limp mode: MultiAir unit, knock sensor, or oil
What goes wrong
The hydraulic MultiAir valve unit is very sensitive to the oil (wrong grade, overdue changes, or low level); knock sensor faults put the car into limp mode, and oil can weep from the timing cover.
How to check it yourself
Check the oil level and service history first, then read the codes. MultiAir codes point to the actuator unit; knock sensor codes to the sensor or its connector.
The usual fix
Change the oil to the exact specification, fix the leak, and replace the knock sensor or MultiAir actuator if the codes return after the oil change.
Signs: Rough idle, Misfire under load, Loss of power, Check engine light, Oil leak

Problem 4
Fiat Panda: Worn or juddering clutch
What goes wrong
The clutch wears or judders, especially on older 1.2 petrol cars used in town.
How to check it yourself
A high biting point, slipping under load, or shudder when pulling away.
The usual fix
Replace the clutch kit.
