Common Dacia Duster problems, and how to check them

These are the 3 faults owners and garages report most often on the Dacia Duster, from the most common down. For each one: what goes wrong, how to check it yourself, and the usual fix, so you know what you’re dealing with before you buy parts.

Problem 1

Dacia Duster: Blocked particulate filter or turbo trouble on short trips

Common 2010–2023 · 1.5 dCi diesel

What goes wrong

Mostly short, slow trips fill the particulate filter faster than it can clean itself; turbos also wear on engines with long oil-change intervals.

How to check it yourself

Read the codes and DPF soot load; listen for a turbo whistle and check the turbo for play and oil.

The usual fix

Regenerate or clean the filter and add longer drives; replace a worn turbo and fix the cause (oil supply, oil changes).

Signs: Loss of power, Check engine light, Turbo whistle

Fault codes: P2002, P2463, P0299

Problem 2

Dacia Duster: Oil consumption and timing chain stretch on the 1.2 turbo petrol

Common 2013–2017 · 1.2 TCe petrol

What goes wrong

Some 1.2 turbo petrol engines from this period burn oil through the piston rings. Running low on oil then speeds up timing chain stretch, and oily spark plugs cause misfires.

How to check it yourself

Fill to the max mark and measure top-ups over 1,000 km; listen for a chain rattle at a cold start and read cam timing codes.

The usual fix

Ask the dealer for an oil-consumption test: many engines got goodwill repairs (new pistons and rings). Replace a stretched chain kit and keep oil changes short.

Signs: High oil consumption, Rattle on cold start, Misfire under load, Blue smoke

Fault codes: P0016, P0300

Problem 3

Dacia Duster: Rust on body and hinges, and water in the footwells

Common 2010–2017 · all engines

What goes wrong

Early Dusters have thin paint and little protection: door, bonnet, and tailgate hinges and some panels rust. Poor bulkhead and door seals let water into the footwells.

How to check it yourself

Look at the hinges, door bottoms, and underbody for rust; lift the front carpets and feel for damp after rain.

The usual fix

Treat and protect rust early (and use cavity wax); reseal the bulkhead or replace door seals and dry the carpets.

Signs: Water leak into cabin
