Citroen Berlingo: Chuffing noise and diesel smell: leaking injector seals
What goes wrong
The copper sealing washers under the injectors leak combustion gas, which bakes a black tar around the injectors (“black death”) and makes a chuffing sound.
How to check it yourself
Look for black, crusty deposits around the injectors and listen for chuffing at idle; a fuel-return test shows worn injectors.
The usual fix
Remove the injectors, clean the seats, and fit new washers and bolts; replace injectors that fail the return test.

Problem 2
Citroen Berlingo: Limp mode from a sooted or failed EGR valve
What goes wrong
The EGR valve clogs with soot or its motor fails, and the engine drops into limp mode.
How to check it yourself
Read the codes and watch EGR position against the requested value in live data; look into the valve for heavy soot.
The usual fix
Clean or replace the EGR valve; include longer drives to reduce soot.

Problem 3
Citroen Berlingo: Particulate filter warning: additive (Eolys) running low
What goes wrong
The filter system uses an additive (Eolys) from a small tank to help burn off soot. When the additive runs low, its pump fails, or the level sensor goes faulty, the filter blocks and the car gives an anti-pollution warning.
How to check it yourself
Read the codes (P1434/P1435/P1437 point to the additive system) and the additive level with a PSA-capable tool; check the pump wiring near the fuel tank.
The usual fix
Refill the additive and reset the counter, or repair the pump or level sensor; then regenerate or clean the filter.
